The 100 Year History of FCS

Family Counseling Service, Inc. (herein referred to as FCS)

1900: Founded by Mayor H.T. Duncan of Lexington to investigate and aid distressed children and families in the community.

1907: the Agency was officially incorporated as the Associated Charities of Lexington, Kentucky.

1917: the agency joined in the first public campaign to solicit funds in support of social service programs.  This was the beginning of the “Community Chest,” which is the precursor of the United Way Agency.

1937: FCS became known as the Family Service Agency as the result of a shift in the emphasis from welfare and charity services to those involving interpersonal and psychological problems.  After this change, the primary problems addressed by the agency became those involving parent-child conflicts, personality problems, and marital discord.

1962: The Agency again changed its name to Family Counseling Service to reflect its counseling and mental health focus.

FCS is a non-profit outpatient mental health agency offering services to individuals, couples, and/or families on a sliding fee scale.  The agency reaches out to those who are unemployed, uninsured, and/or underinsured.   Family Counseling Service is dedicated to providing affordable, responsive counseling and guidance to help people cope with life’s problems and improve the quality of their relationships.
